She is the author and editor of a number of gardening books, including <span style=\"font-size: revert; color: var(--wp--preset--color--ti-fg); white-space: pre-wrap; font-family: var(--wp--preset--font-family--fraunces);\">&#8220;<\/span><a style=\"font-size: revert; white-space: pre-wrap; font-family: var(--wp--preset--font-family--fraunces);\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Gardening-Iowa-Surrounding-Areas-Book\/dp\/0877455848\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1231000250&amp;sr=1-2\">Gardening in Iowa<\/a><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: var(--wp--preset--color--ti-fg); white-space: pre-wrap; font-family: var(--wp--preset--font-family--fraunces);\">.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p>The former editor of Better Homes and Garden&#8217;s &#8220;Flower Gardening&#8221; magazine, she is now a freelance writer and editor who has contributed to a variety of other gardening books and many magazine articles in Better Homes and Gardens, Country Home, Horticulture, Garden Design, and others. She also writes a garden column for the Cedar Rapids Gazette. A graduate of Iowa State University and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mastergardener.iastate.edu\/\">Master Gardener<\/a>, she has lived in Ames for more than 40 years, where she has juggled work and raising three children with tending a sometimes messy but always highly varied garden.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theiowagardener.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Ben-raking1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"216\" height=\"443\" src=\"https:\/\/theiowagardener.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Ben-raking1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-640\" style=\"width:182px;height:373px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theiowagardener.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Ben-raking1.jpg 216w, https:\/\/theiowagardener.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Ben-raking1-146x300.jpg 146w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Benjamin Allen worked in the publishing industry for more than 20 years as a writer, reporter and editor. His publications in both print and online primarily cover subjects of home improvement, landscaping, and gardening although he has ventured into food and Iowa culture on occasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His Craftsman-style home built in 1912 and small lot and garden give him ample opportunities to put his do-it-yourself skills to good use. He annually orders far too seeds in the depths of winter and subsequently creates an overcrowded yet bountiful garden filled with vegetables, flowers, and herbs.
